Coaching is an “inside-to-outside” process that really begins with you.
It’s about discovering who you are, what you stand for, and the difference you want to make to your life in order to make a difference in this world. Those answers are all within you, but require some searching, refining, deepening, refining. They are in your story, your experience, your reason for being.
The ICF defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking anc creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential…Coaches honor the client as the expert in his or her own life and work and believe every client is creative, resourceful, and whole.”
Coaching focuses much more on the day to day goals and does not delve into the past or try to treat problems.
As a coach, I see you as whole and unbroken. I work forward with you from the day we begin. Often coaches are used as an adjunct to therapy as we can help clients implement the insights they had in the therapy room so that they’re better able to do the homework. I also really enjoy working as a post treatment adjunct after therapy for people who want to take what they learned in therapy and help them thrive.
For someone not in therapy, we focus on making sure you have a plan on how you will do things differently when you wake up in the morning. While it does involve quite a bit of talking, you usually have lists or worksheets to use to help keep you focused on making progress in between meetings. If you’re someone who enjoys writing, weekly writing prompts work to keep your mind on the growth you’re trying to make.
Ultimately you want to discover the overlap of who you are and the difference you are here to make with someone who can reflect back to you your strengths and skills that will help you out of the pain you’re in now.
This requires a deep and patient process of discovery. Coaching is not therapy: I do not diagnose or treat anything. The most I can say is you suffer from the aches and pains of the human condition.
Coaching relationships are usually not very long. I offer a 6 week program which gives you the skills and habits you’ll need to make changes in your life. But sometimes where we are in life requires a slower or more intense pace and I offer flexible packages if you would like more time. I also offer one-off “pick my brain” sessions for those who just want some quick clarity on a situation.
